Code Word Courage by Kirby Larson
This book gets two thumbs up from me. It is historical fiction (my favorite genre). You can easily follow up with more books on Navajo Code Talkers or WWII. I have read two books by Kirby Larson and LOVED both!!!
Billie and her older brother (Leo) have lived with their Great Aunt Birdie ever since mom passed away. Leo is about to leave for the warfront. He brings home a fellow Marine from boot camp, Denny. Now Billie has to share her brother on his last weekend home. On top of that, Denny comes with an injured, stray dog Bear.
Billie cares for Bear as he recovers and becomes deeply attached. It is time for Leo and Denny, a Navajo Code talker, to ship out. Can Bear help Billie (and Denny) find what's most important?
Interest level is 3rd- 8th grade
