This is an Iowa Children's Choice Award book and that is why I picked it up to read. In addition, I have worked with a student who was selectively mute. This book helped me see the world from her perspective.

This is a really good book and an Iowa's Children's Choice Award. Try to imagine your life like Amal's. Can you imagine leaving your home at 12?

I think Alan Gratz is a very good author. This is a war book and war isn't always "kid friendly". Alan Gratz does a good job writing from multiple perspectives. This gives us an idea on how war touches MANY people. I debated putting this on our third grade blog but reminded myself that kids play video games that are just as graphic. If you like history this is a good book for you!
This is a higher reading level; maybe 4th or 5th grade.

My son and I are reading this series. We are currently on the fifth book. After each book we watch the movie together. This has become one of my favorite times of the day. J.K. Rowling did a fantastic job with these books. I bet you will enjoy them, even if this isn't your typical genre!

At the end of the novel, information about wildfires and useful safety tips add to the reader's understanding of one of the US's most dangerous natural disasters.
